Denver beats Utah State on Olson buzzer-beater
Man, it’s a shame this won’t become an ongoing conference rivalry. The third game in the last four years between Denver and Utah State — and the second (and last) WAC conference tilt between the two — ended in hugely dramatic fashion, with DU sophomore sharp-shooter Brett Olson nailing a massive 30-foot three-pointer at the buzzer to beat the Blue Aggies in Logan on Thursday:
It was actually a bad offensive possession by the Pioneers, who simply cannot seem to figure out how to speed things up from their typical Princeton offense system when it’s late in the game and the situation calls for urgency. I was all ready to compose a tweet lamenting that fact — and then Olson somehow hit that shot. Incredible.
As a practical matter, te win keeps Denver’s regular-season conference title hopes alive. Now they just need to win at San Jose State on Saturday to set up the huge season-ending three-game homestand, with everything to play for, against New Mexico State, Texas-Arlington and Louisiana Tech.
I’ll have more next week on both DU and Northern Colorado, which also had an enormous win Thursday.
